Ganado Red Navajo Rug by Linda Joe

Woven by Linda Joe of Ganado, Arizona, this Ganado Red rug measures 38.5 by 24 inches. Using a combination of natural and commercial wool, it reflects the style developed in the late 19th and early 20th century under trader Lorenzo Hubbell. 

Ganado Red rugs are known for their bold central diamond motif and their use of deep red dyes. The red wool, often obtained through trade for aniline dye, became a hallmark of this style. The design elements also borrow from earlier Navajo blankets, creating a bridge between past and present. 

Linda’s weaving carries the tradition forward while adding her own hand to the story. The rug is both a decorative piece and a cultural statement, connecting to the history of the Hubbell Trading Post and the enduring artistry of Navajo women.
