El Morro National Monument: Guide to the Inscription Rock Trail

Inscription Rock Trail at El Morro National Monument is a short loop hike of approximately 3/4 miles and takes visitors past the inscriptions and back to the visitor center. It also connects to the Headland Trail, which is a two-mile hike typically taking about two hours.

A sandstone bluff juts above the surrounding landscape. From there you can see how this spot came to be known as El Morro, which is Spanish for "the headland" or "the bluff." Let your eyes adjust to the light and notice the waves of color that ripple through the rocks, marking the passage of millions of years. Humans have also left their mark. Look up and you’ll see bricks from the more than 700-year-old pueblo called Atsinna. This trail guide is a tantalizing glimpse at the human stories contained at El Morro.
